Heating and Air Facts

What is MERV?

Have you ever stood in the filter aisle and felt overwhelmed by all the numbers? Your filter size may be easy to spot, but what is MERV and is higher better?

MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value. This rating measures how effectively the filter catches dust and contaminants. MERV ratings are from 1-16.

It may surprise you to learn higher is not always better. In fact, your AC or Heat Pump manufacturer suggests the best MERV rating for your system. Thicker, pleated filters make your HVAC system work harder to intake air. Imagine trying to inhale air through a filter. That’s basically what your system is doing … breathing. Thinner, nonpleated filters are fine, just remember to change them out regularly, especially if you have pets or suffer with seasonal allergies.
